Anchor Symbol with Grapes and Sheaves

Stone altar frontal, now a display item
Church of Santo Stefano, Assisi, Italy

In Christian art the anchor is a symbol of Christ. Here the point is emphasized by the crossbar. The grapevines and the sheaves of wheat symbolize the bread and wine of the Eucharistic liturgy.

Most sources date the church as 12th century, though this piece could be earlier.
